20 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE OF UKRAINE

Round Table

"PEOPLE POWER IN UKRAINE: WAYS OF PROGRESS"

(Press-Release, reduced)

On the 1st of October, in the conference-hall of the Association of Ukrainian Banks, the round table on “People Power in Ukraine: Ways of Progress” was held. Co-organizers of the measure  were the Organizational Committee for Creation of the Civil Movement “For People Power!” and the civil organization “Small Circle”. Among participants - representatives of political parties, trade unions and civil organizations there were the Head of political party “Self-Governing Ukrainian State”, a member of Organizational Committee V.Bychikhin, the Chairman of the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine N.Vitrenko, the Chairman of the Liberal party of Ukraine P.Tsyganko, the Chairman of political party “Righteousness” V.Yaremenko and others.

The initiator of the measure - the Organizational Committee for Creation of the Civil Movement “For People Power!” – considers that Ukraine after 20 years of its independence still is in a state of transition and, ahead of the next parliamentary election,  goes into a new period of radical political, legal and social-economic transformations. The vector of future changes will depend directly on composition of ideological aspirations of Ukrainian parties, as well as on effectiveness of their participation in political process; at that, a coherence of their aims and coordination of their actions are of substantial importance.

To organize common actions of the civil-political active, the Organizational Committee has proposed an initiative which is aiming at liquidation of the established  financial-oligarchic regime,  removing from power of governmental officials who have brought discredit on oneself, and establishing of power of people under which only spirit, intellect and will of people would determine rules of common life in the state and any citizen could take part in elaboration and approval of decisions that deal with his life.

This initiative could be a joint project for political powers of different ideological trends, as there is no any party which does not appeal to develop civil society and does not use in its program documents such word as “democracy”, “power of people” and “people power”. The Organizational Committee considers that consolidation of efforts of  the social-political active of the state in a direction of establishment of people power is the only mean to save Ukraine of a threat of anyone’s dictatorship, to preserve a diversity of political positions and pluralism of opinions as basic precondition for harmonic development of the society without crisis.

The organizers fostered hope that leaders of political parties could set aside all issues that divide political forces and politicians for a period of a war (as actually, the state power declared a war against Ukrainian people) and would make a step towards each other, would jointly start building free and democratic future of Ukraine.

And this has happened!

At the round table, another 8 parties joined the expanded Organizational Committee for Creation of the Civil Movement “For People Power!” which includes now 17 comrades-in-arms more. Among them, there were representatives of 9 parties:

V.Vitrenko, V.Marchenko (The Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine),

V.Yaremenko (political party “Righteousness”),

S.Karpenko (political party “People Power”),

V.Kovalenko, S.Savchuk, A.Shevchenko (The Internet Party of Ukraine),

S.Krinitsky (political party “Self-Governing Ukrainian State”),

V.Maliarenko (political party “Batkivschina”),

I.Meleschenko (The European Party of Ukraine),

A.Fitio (The Ukrainian Party),

P.Tsyganko (The Liberal Party of Ukraine).

This friendly expansion of the Organizational Committee became a practical affirmation of the fact that a way to a creation of a broad people’s movement, organization of a nationwide referendum on the issue of people power and putting of results of the referendum into effect was acknowledged by the round table participants as the most acceptable to establish the people power in the state. At the same time, many participants do not exclude a revolutionary way of future development. Also, many ones consider that it is necessary to use all possibilities of a parliamentary way.

It became clear that the idea of people power can become really national (all-people) idea which is able to unify political parties and people for joint actions.

Taking into consideration that there is no time to be lost, the round table participants decided to undertake a task without delay. They appointed the 8th of October as a time of the next meeting to discuss projects of:

- The Organizational Committee’s appeal to the citizens of Ukraine.

- Organizational basis of the Movement.

- The plan  of nationwide actions.

- An Agreement.

- The Organizational Committee’s position on the land sale.

- The Organizational Committee’s position on The Law of Ukraine on Elections of the People’s Deputies.
